The theme of our demo-lesson is “Let’s save our planet Earth clean and green”. We live on the unique planet Earth. The Earth is 4,600 million years old. Modern man has lived on the Earth for only 35,000 years but, in that time, we have changed our planet in many ways. Many of the things we have done are good, but many, many more are not good for the Earth.

Aidai: Every year many animals, plants, fish and insects are lost forever. We cannot get back the lost animals. People cut down trees that support different kind of life. Many animals are becoming endangered. Every year there are fewer elephants. The pollution also poisons animals or kills the plants. Pollution is very dangerous for future life. We need to protect the Earth from pollution

Aiana A.: Rainforests cover six per cent of the Earth surface. There are rainforests in many parts of the world but the biggest forests are in South America, Africa and South East Asia. There aren’t any rainforests in Europe or North America. About 75% of all the types of animals that we know come from rainforests.

A: Around the Earth, there is a special form of oxygen called “ozone” (O₃). Ozone stops ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) from aerosol sprays and factories have made a hole in the ozone. This means that too much ultraviolet radiation now enters Earth. This is very dangerous.

B: In big cities cars and buses have polluted the air. Many people now have very bad health problems. Factories have also polluted the land and the water. As a result, many rivers and lakes are now dead.

The Earth’s atmosphere is made up of a delicately balanced blanket of gases. By burning fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) we are pumping billions of tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.

Temperatures in the western Arctic are increasing at three to five times the global rate, causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise.

Janbolot: Different events can change an ecosystem’s balance. The pond is habitat. The pond and its inhabitants make up an ecosystem. All the inhabitants of the pond make up the pond community. When people or natural disasters change an ecosystem, plants and animals can become endangered.

All over the world, people have cut down millions of trees. As a result, many types of animals and plants are now disappearing.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the air has increased a lot. This has formed a “blanket” around the Earth. The heat from the Sun cannot escape and so the temperature is rising (the greenhouse effect). This means that the level of the sea is rising and the climate is changing. CO₂comes from burning oil, coal and wood.

Save it, Reduce it and Recycle it!

Every day we throw away millions of tons of rubbish. A lot of this is paper, cardboard, glass and metal lat we can use again. We must find ways to recycle the things we use.

Many natural resources are not renewable. Coal, gas, oil, metals and minerals, for example, will finish one day. Other resources take a long time to grow, such as trees are not always available, such as water. We must find ways to reduce the amount of resources and energy that we use. We also have to find alternative ways to make energy. We can use the Sun, the wind, the sea and the heat of the Earth.
